Oakland, California
The Fox Theater first opened its doors in October 1928, and for more than thirty years was a first-rate instutution in the bustling downtown shopping and entertainment district. Sadly, as Oakland’s downtown lost it’s retail stores and restaurants, the theater closed in 1966.
After a intense two year restoration project led by developer Phil Tagami, the Fox opened again as a live music venue, arts school and restaurant—eighty years to the day from its first Grand Opening. The devloper’s hope is that the theater’s opening finally will anchor the long-awaited renaissance of an Uptown entertainment district of theaters, restaurants and nightspots.
